Many conditions can cause floor joist to deflect or drop from their original bearing position in the basement foundation wall. In Philadelphia during the early colonial periods into the mid 19th Century and well into the 20th century, the Philadelphia row home was built on stone foundation walls. Over time, the first floor joist which were original left exposed and seen from the basement or cellar space can experience deflection from termite or moisture damage.
